The Environment of Western Crete
This land and its people survived here for millennia and HERMITAGE is located in a Natura Protected Nature, treat it with care. These are things you can expect when you come to HERMITAGE
Rough terrain
Located 1 hour from Chania, the access to HERMITAGE is a 700m of earth road leading you up to the villa that sits on its own private land. Crete has so much more to offer if you are in a 4×4 car (which we recommend) and with a pair of hiking boots.
Serious weather
HERMITAGE is located at an altitude of 435m and roughly 250km from Africa. Our village is roughly half way between Kissamos and Elafonisi. Protect yourself well against the sun in summer (dive in the pool and drink lot’s of water) and against the wind in winter. And yes, we do sometimes have snow around the house and on the mountains…
Wild nature
Expect to encounter local wild animals like eagles and vultures but also smaller creatures like lizards, marters and beautiful insects such as red and blue dragonflies and the cutest butterflies. Don’t worry, they all know what they are doing and never harm. plus, being high on the mountain also means hardly any mosquitos!
Great beaches and glorious mountains
Vlatos is located in the Western part of Crete which is known for its breathtaking beaches and sceneries. Relax at the sea at Elafonisi, Falasarna or Balos. Or go hiking, such as a visit to Polirinia – the great acropolis of the Minoans.
Mini Market
On the main road close to our village you can buy gas, alcohol and tobacco as well basic products, also fresh. Cash is still king in this part of the world.
Great food and drink
In and around Vlatos you will find ample opportunity to indulge in local and authentic delicacies. Ask us for suggestions!

Varies per season but there are some basics
Explore the mountains
Cross these wondrous landscapes with a guide on an e-bike or go off roading with your jeep and experience the breathtaking scenery. Walking paths are everywhere for easy going or serious trail runs. In the summer, you may want to run the local marathon near Elafonisi.
Shopping therapy
There is some great shopping to do for the ladies (Kastelli, Chania) and the men too, don’t worry. We will happily provide you with suggestions.
Boat or Landrover trips
Rent you private boat or join the organised ones and visit the Fortress on Gramvousa Island and swim in the lagunes of Balos. Or join the cool Landrover trips and experience the beauties of Western Crete!

Relax at White Lake, Elafonisi, Kedrodassos, Sfinari, Falasarna, Ravdoucha and many more
Museums
There are two archeological museums worth visiting (Kastelli, Chania) or do some wondering of your own at the acropolis of ancient Polirinia. And don’t forget to visit the beautiful harbour of Chania with splendid shops of all kinds.
Great food and music
There is some really excellent dishes in Milia Restaurant (best Greek Chef) and beautiful music to be experienced every Sunday at Vlatos Jazz in the ancient church of the village
